LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. The LASIK procedure uses a computer controlled ultra-violet beam of light, known as an excimer laser.
A microkeratome is used to lift a thin layer of the cornea to create a protective flap that stays connected on one side. The cornea is then sculpted with the laser to the shape required to allow light to focus more directly on the retina, this reduces or eliminates a variety of refractive errors. Once the cornea has been shaped, the flap is returned to its original position for a quick, natural recovery.
