FAQsLASIK Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take before I can see well, and how long will it take before I have my best vision?
Most patients will achieve good vision the day of the surgery and find that their eyes feel fairly normal within a day. It can take up to two to three months for a patient's best vision to occur.

Will I need to wear glasses after I undergo LASIK?
Most patients who have LASIK do not require glasses for their normal day-to-day activities, but some patients may still require a minimal corrective prescription. If you require bifocals before undergoing LASIK, you will still need reading glasses after the procedure. Patients over the age of 40 may also find that they need to wear reading glasses due to normal aging of the eye.

Are the results of the LASIK procedure permanent?
LASIK is a surgical procedure that permanently reshapes the eye by the removal of corneal tissue. Therefore, the physical results of LASIK are permanent. However, LASIK does not stop the natural aging of the eyes that occurs over time. A patient's vision can still change over time after the LASIK procedure is performed.

Can a LASIK procedure be "re-done"?
A second LASIK procedure is a viable option for some patients. Before a second procedure is performed, it is important for a patient to meet with his/her eye doctor to discuss the causes of vision change and all possible treatment solutions.

Does the LASIK procedure hurt?
Before the procedure is performed, the eye is anesthetized with a topical eye drop. Patients do not experience any pain during the LASIK procedure but may experience a sensation of pressure. Patients may experience some mild eye irritation following LASIK, but the effects usually dissipate within a few hours.

How safe is LASIK?
LASIK is very safe, but it is important for patients to understand that it is a surgical procedure. As with all forms of surgery, there is some risk involved. Severe complications occur in less than 1% of performed procedures.

Can I have LASIK on both of my eyes at one time?
Yes, patients can have LASIK performed on both eyes at once, and this practice is quite common. In some cases, LASIK is performed on just one eye, so that the results can be evaluated before performing the procedure on the second eye.

How long do I have to wait after having LASIK to resume my normal activities?
Most people are able to return to their jobs the day after undergoing a LASIK procedure. Patients need to avoid rubbing their eyes, contact sports, and swimming for several weeks following their LASIK procedure.
