Ophthalmologists in Traverse City
Robert K. Butryn, MD
Dr. Butryn founded Northern Vision Eye Care in his hometown of Traverse City Michigan in 1998. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and was among the first surgeons in the nation to be certified to perform LASIK surgery. Patients and doctors alike quickly recognized his high success rate and he is now considered one of the premier cataract and refractive surgeons in Northern Michigan.
Dr. Butryn has performed refractive surgery on physicians, surgeons, nurses, and many other healthcare professionals, and has established a reputation as a skilled and compassionate physician, with the ability to manage a wide variety of eye problems. By providing a unique combination of high tech surgical management and friendly, personal patient care, he has gained the trust of patients and physicians alike. He is one of a new breed of ophthalmologists who place individual patient care above all else.
At Northern Vision Eye Care, Dr. Butryn also continues to provide the latest in the surgical management of cataracts. He is on the forefront of modern Laser cataract surgery, which combines topical anesthesia (no needles), self-sealing laser incisions (no blades), and infused ocular medications (no drops). Dr. Butryn has been using and perfecting the clear cornea technique, which is touted as the fastest, safest method for cataract removal since 1997, making him one of the first to adopt this “needle-free, stitch-free and drop-free” method.
Northern Vision Eye Care relocated to its new building in the Copper Ridge Marketplace in 2006. The office has a warm, up-north feel with its fireplace and timber frame construction. It includes a state of the art laser center, which was custom designed for the iFS Femtosecond and Visx Star S4 IR LASIK excimer laser as well as lasers for macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetes. A fully equipped in-office operating suite is used for other surgical and cosmetic procedures, such as Botox, blepharoplasties and eyelid biopsies.
Dr. Butryn is a proud alumnus of Kalamazoo College where he graduated Cum Laude. He completed medical school in 1994, graduating in the top 1/3 of his class from Wayne State University. During his medical school studies, he also published and presented his research at the Kresge Eye Institute related to diabetic eye disease and received the Dong H. Shin Ophthalmology Research Award as well as the Distinction in Biomedical Research Award. After completing a one-year internal medicine internship at Sinai Hospital, he then completed a three-year ophthalmology residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit where he also served as Chief Resident in 1998.
Dr. Butryn is a Traverse City native who graduated from Traverse City Senior High School and was a member of the 1985 state championship Trojan football team. Call today to set up an appointment with Dr. Butryn to see if you qualify for LASIK or for your general eye care needs.
Amy S. Ranger, MD
Dr. Ranger was born and raised in metropolitan Detroit, the youngest of seven children. Graduating with a 4.0 GPA from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, she studied Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Ranger attended University of Michigan Medical School from 1991-1995 and spent the summer of 1992 at Northwestern University with a team of biomechanical engineers and orthopedic surgeons, implementing CAD robotics to guide total knee replacement surgery. During a medical school research rotation, a fascinating project at the Henry Ford Hospital, in which she studied the effects of nitric oxide on intraocular pressures, finalized her decision to become an ophthalmologist rather than an orthopedic surgeon. She completed her internship and ophthalmology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Having a particular interest in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, she published papers and presented her research in Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy at state and national meetings.
Before moving to Traverse City, she spent one year in New Orleans developing a refractive surgery practice for an established ophthalmology group. In 2000, Dr. Ranger began a private practice in Traverse City joining the medical staff at Munson Medical Center.
Along with general ophthalmology, Dr. Ranger focuses on oculoplastic and eyelid surgery, Botox, cataract and refractive surgery, as well as medical diseases of the eye, including diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and dry eye.
After work, Dr. Ranger spends time with her children, Max, Emma and Isabelle, and her husband, Dr. William Ranger. She enjoys the outdoors, recreational sports and supporting any extracurricular activity in which her children participate (dance, soccer, ski racing, trumpet, piano, violin). Having spent a summer in Mexico as an exchange student, she speaks Spanish fluently and loves to travel internationally.
